Diversification and energy security: Adriatic LNG confirms its position as the third point for natural gas imports in Italy

Rovigo, 3 March 2025 – Adriatic LNG, the company that operates the regasification terminal located off the Veneto coast, achieved a new operational record for the third consecutive year, further consolidating its leadership in the LNG sector.

In 2024, the terminal injected 8.7 billion cubic meters of natural gas into the grid (+2.5% compared to 2023), covering approximately 15% of the national gas demand, which amounted to 61.7 billion cubic meters (+0.2% compared to 2023) , thus confirming itself as the third entry point for gas imports in Italy, after the pipelines from Algeria and Azerbaijan

Considering national LNG sector, Italian regasification terminals injected 14.7 billion cubic meters into the grid , with over 61% supplied through the Adriatic LNG terminal, covering 24% of the total gas demand. Although overall figures showed a slight decline compared to the previous year - partly due to maintenance shutdowns at some terminals (16.6 billion cubic meters were imported in 2023 ) - they highlight the crucial role of LNG in Italy’s energy mix.

For a country like Italy, heavily reliant on energy imports, Adriatic LNG plays a crucial role in national security by diversifying supply sources and positioning itself as a reliable and competitive infrastructure for its customers. In 2024, the terminal received 76 LNG carriers, primarily from Qatar and the United States, as well as from North Africa and South America.

As for vessel types, 65% of the total were “super large-scale carriers’ vessels,” LNG carriers with a capacity of up to 217,000 liquid cubic meters - among the largest available on the market. Since 2020, Adriatic LNG has been the first and only regasification terminal in Italy capable of receiving such vessels, offering evident advantages in terms of optimizing discharged volumes.

Alfredo Balena, Director of External Relations at Adriatic LNG, stated: “The global LNG market is increasingly interconnected, marked by high uncertainty due to geopolitical instability and intense competition from Asian countries absorbing much of the available supply. In this scenario, Adriatic LNG continues to be a key reference point at both national and European levels, ensuring high operational reliability and offering high-value-added services to its customers. For the third consecutive year, we have achieved our best operational result, ensuring a steady energy flow to the country: in 2024, terminal’s operational reliability rate reached 99.7%, while the utilization rate was among the highest in Europe, confirming our regasification terminal’s excellence in performance and safety.”

Backed by great results in over 15 years of activity, Adriatic LNG is prepared to face future market challenges. In this regard, the project to increase the terminal’s regasification capacity by 0.5 billion cubic meters per year is nearing the final stage of approval. This new capacity has already been fully allocated for the next 20 years” - Balena concluded.

Since 2009, over 1,200 LNG carriers arrived at the regasification terminal, coming from more than 10 countries, for a total of over 100 billion cubic meters of gas sent into the national grid.
